This landscape painting is HUGE! It’s a 4′ x 8′ panel that I painted for the VA on Soldier’s Home Road, West Lafayette.
We talked about painting directly onto their wall, but their walls have a lumpy surface, kind of like a woven basket, so that wouldn’t have worked.
I used acrylic paint on plywood, lots of Golden pure Cadmium (so I was very careful about washing my hands). I went around and around with the guys at Home Depot, trying to figure out what kind of wood to use – particleboard is a lot lighter, which is a plus when you have to haul something large and heavy. But particleboard is largely made of glue! I didn’t trust it to last. So I used good old plywood, and lots of gesso.
This photo isn’t actually the final – I made another change after I reached this point.
This photo was taken on the road to Attica. I wanted the retirees to enjoy a pleasant memory of driving past Indiana cornfields 🙂
I’m almost finished with my second painting for the VA, and I’ll be doing two more after that. I’m so honored to have this project!
